Entry-Level Actuarial Opportunities

Actuarial Research Corporation (ARC) is a small, well-established, privately held consulting firm that performs a blend of innovative actuarial and healthcare economic analyses. We are involved in reviewing and analyzing healthcare policy and reform initiatives, managed care, and long-term care. Our principal clients are federal government agencies, and we also serve a variety of private-sector organizations. As our name suggests, ARC staff possess considerable expertise in actuarial science, particularly as it relates to public programs. However, we also have a large portfolio of business related to general health policy analysis, supported by a team with diverse policy, research, and analytical experiences.

We seek individuals who are interested in applying their actuarial skills in a unique non-corporate setting, helping to shape a major portion of the U.S. healthcare system through the development and implementation of healthcare financing policy.

YOU’LL FIT WELL WITH US IF YOU ARE:

  • A critical thinker. You have fluency with numbers and data, a desire to use those skills to untangle complex problems, and the ability to draw meaningful insights.
  • A strong communicator. You can bridge technical analyses with non-technical audiences, both verbally and in writing.
  • A team player. You are skilled in coordinating team assignments and providing technical assistance to team members.
  • Interested in the policies and politics of U.S. healthcare. You will work on projects and with clients that directly shape the healthcare landscape by influencing legislative and regulatory policies and executing healthcare programs.
  • Motivated. You are driven to learn and grow professionally. You excel in ambiguous environments that require self-motivation. You are on the way to becoming an ASA or FSA.
  • Computer-savvy. You are proficient in Microsoft Office products. You either have experience with statistical software such as R, SAS or Stata, or are willing to learn.

DUTIES YOU WILL PERFORM:

At ARC, you will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of health-related projects. For example, you will work in teams with other ARC employees and with peers in client organizations to:

  • Conduct studies of historical spending under public programs, including analysis of the components driving changes in spending.
  • Analyze recent financial experience and prepare estimates of future experience for healthcare programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, considering general social, economic, and demographic factors.
  • Serve as the bridge between health financing system concepts and healthcare data and analytics, using your understanding of health cost drivers to help shape clients’ policy proposals and implementation decisions.
  • Research applicable legislation, academic studies, and other relevant literature to understand the broader context of projects and inform the approach to actuarial analysis.
  • Provide actuarial and technical assistance in reviewing alternative payment models, managed care programs, and program waivers.
  • Review actuarial documentation supporting capitation program bids and applications to participate in payment models, and provide opinions on the reasonableness and soundness of capitation rates.
  • Assist in planning and coordination of analysis within larger projects as appropriate.
  • Complete your certification as an Associate or Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (ASA or FSA), and become a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA).

WE OFFER:

  • Competitive pay
  • Generous benefits
  • Support for actuarial exams: paid study time, SOA exam fees and study resources, and a compensation structure that rewards passing exams
  • A flexible work environment with an emphasis on work/life balance
